Mâine Mă Duc - Tomorrow I Leave portrays the life of a woman who always has to leave someone behind. Maria is a 24 hour caregiver. Once every 4 weeks, Maria leaves behind her Romanian village and embarks on a journey of over 1000 kilometres in order to care for elderly people in Austria.

In the meantime, her own aging parents are left to their own device. Her husband Daniel also looks back on many years of hard labour abroad. He now takes charge of the household. Their two sons, however, envisage a completely different future. After four weeks Maria returns, yet she is not to stay. One day, she would like to use the money she has earned abroad to open a small bed and breakfast in order to be able to quit traveling.

Mâine Mă Duc - Tomorrow I Leave is a documentary about the hopes and dreams of those who leave and those who remain. It highlights the balancing act between upward social mobility and close family bonds among the backdrop of a torn
Europe. How much sacrifice does it take to live a comfortable life? Mâine Mă Duc - Tomorrow I Leave is a portrait of a family which is never complete.

A classroom becomes a little assembly hall: students practice joint decision making, discuss actively, vote on self-interest and solidarity in the pandemic. Meanwhile, the Austrian parliamentary building is being renovated and its substance renewed. A lively exercise in democracy alongside its derelict site.

„Sophie works as a chimney sweep in Austria. This is no ordinary profession for a woman, as this atmospheric black-and-white documentary shows. In voice-over, Sophie calmly talks about her experiences in a normal working day. At the same time, we follow her through one such day—leaving the house, taking the bus, changing out of heels into working boots and proficiently wielding the chimney brush in a variety of environments.

The shots are carefully composed and framed, sometimes becoming a virtually abstract interplay of lines. The calmness of the film and Sophie’s almost-laconic narrative style make a stark contrast with the issues she encounters on a daily basis, from the unconscious everyday sexism of male colleagues and customers to downright threatening situations. Yet she doesn’t see this as a reason to give up her job for a more conventional one. She finds an inventive solution to every problem, and enjoys the conversations and deep connections she can make with her clients.“ © IDFA Catalogue Textwww.idfa.nl/en
